Whats in a name?

Well..i say everything....Let me give you some examples:

  • My periamma, whose actual name is saavithri,is affectionately called chaakku (which means gunny bag in tamil..)
  • My cousin, who has the wonderful name Kothandaraman, is affectionately called dhandam ( meaning waste/useless in tamil)
  • My other cousin who beacme a hindu purohit is called kudumi ( meaning pony tail.....)
  • Athimber, which is how sister's husband or aunt's husband is adressed is affectionately shortened to thamba(there is not such word in tamil.....)
  • The boy who was once rolly-polly and oh-so-cute was called bujji.....he grows up to look like sylvester stallone...imagine one day bujji's boss calls home only to hear his mom call him "bujji, call for you"

There was even an article in Hindu on the same topic.....on how names affect children and people in general.....
My mom wanted to name me "sundara kamakshi"....I am glad she didn't....

:)

1st time here.. nice blog and well names do affect ppl's lives.. no doubt about that.. I remember when in school.. depending on the alphabet ur name staerts used to affect the experiments we get etc.. u know with the roll numbers..

and many of our names (tamilian..) are really twisted.. and we do invent some wonderful pet names too...

Very true the names they call at homes, sounds weird to others, but they are just out of affection and love.
My cousin is called chakka (short form for sakara (sugar)), i donot know how they derived the name.
One of my aunt is called "amma poonu"

Names, shape the career of a person.. :) Ask me how -> if ur name is the name next to the class ranker's, in alphabetical order, you will have a "BRIGHT" future....
If your name, happens to come between 2 ppl, who are just like you, 'govinda govindaa' :)
PS: All this are subject to the persons 'exam hall' talents, and the First rankers co-operation! :)
